The manual leaves some details out, but overall is decent. It doesn't go into depth about choosing the spacers, and when to install the new crush sleeve when setting pinion depth. If you had a separate book or manual for setting pinion depth, and adjusting the side bearings to get the proper contact pattern you'd be good to go.

Hello All,
This is my first post on S2KI, so forgive me if I am posting this in the wrong place. I have gotten by pretty well until now searching the forum and internet for answers but can not seem to find what I need to know this time.
THE QUESTION:
I am installing a set of the Mazdaspeed 4.44 gears (pn: M054-27-110A) in my differential and wanted to know where I could find the backlash specifications. I understand the OEM spec (0.0035"-0.0043") might not be correct since these are not the OEM gears. Does anyone here with these gears know the backlash spec?
Thanks in advance.

Answer: 0.0020"-0.0040" is acceptable

It's all about the contact pattern.
You find it by changing spacers (= changing pinion depth) and adjusting backlash.
There is a page in the service manual where they say what to change when you get a certain contact pattern.
Most installers don't change the pinion depth, they go with the spacer they find.
If they are lucky, it's the one they actually need.
The service manual treats every install as the final one, so they say to use a new crush sleeve every time.
That's a bit overcorrect (and expensive) but not wrong.
Btw.. the backlash adjustment is paired with the ring/Torsen pre-load.
They both have to be within limits.
That can be difficult to get as the lockplates also have to match with a groove.

Have you seen how expensive and how many spacers you can order from Honda?! You can easily spend +$100 USD on spacers alone. Granted you're not going to buy every spacer under the sun, but it helps to have a good variety.
