Thanks for the informative post Road Rage and XViper.

Here is the text of my testimonial I posted on the Valvoline web site:
http://www.valvoline.com/pages/products/pr...l.asp?product=7

Matt of VIRGINIA

"I have a 1993 Ford Explorer that I bought from a friend when it had 124,000 miles on it. He had always got about 19.8 MPG. I switched to MaxLife shortly after I bought it. My mileage on trips has increased to 21.5 MPG and the oil consumption has gone down. It now has 168,000 miles on it. By the way, my Honda went 253,496 miles and my Toyata 4X4 PU has almost 178,000 miles on it on a diet of Valvoline oil and quality gas."

There are fifty-three other post like this from people like me.

Asura: It is hard for me to comment, as there are variables at play that I cannot affirm as "close enough" to make the comparison fair. All I can say is that I have seen some RL performance metrics that give me concern, and while I do not think it has the edge over all the other syns in had in 1982 when i first discovered it (and was the only re-seller in Virginia), it is still a top-oil. Amsoil uses very good add packs - I would also compare the high temp viscosity stats for both, to see if they are equal.

What were you using before? (what is the 20 degF drop in comparison to)?

Remember that it is not just the friction reduction that lowers temps, but 2 other factors:
1) Synoils have the ability to "sink" heat intrinsically better than mineral oils
2) the mono-molecularity of synoils makes their self-friction contributions to the overall sump temp lower

Why don't you use Euro 5w40 or Delvac1? Or do you not drive in the cold? Is it cold where you are (I did not make a note of your location).

The MaxLife Engine Protectant oil has been discontinued by Valvoline, and the sister product from the UK market "Professional Series Oil Treatment."

Valvoline's direct replacement (different formulation) is the Syn-Power oil treatment.

This can't be true. I found a MaxLife oil treatment at my local Pep Boys just last week... It didn't say "engine protector" persay, but it came in a 15 oz bottle, and it was an oil treatment for sure...

I'm glad this old thread got bumped, as I hadn't seen it. It's very informative.

RR may not be around any more, but maybe someone else knows the answer to this naive question:

Last time I tried this (not on my S), the "makeup oil" was just about a complete fill, as just about all of the oil ran out when I took off the old filter. (I found this out accidentally, when I tried a DYI oil change and took off the old filter before draining the oil. A video of that would have everyone in hysterics.)

Is the S different? Or, to ask another way: how do you do this?

Thanks, HPH

There are two Valvoline additives: SynPower Oil Treament in 15 oz bottle and SynPower Engine Treament in 32 oz bottle. The Oil Treament is popular in www.bobistheoilguy.com crowd because it is very high in Moly.
