Marking the axles when removing them?

Marking the axles when removing them?
I've seen people marking the axle where the buckets bolt up. Do we really need to mark them or was this just for being safe in case we did need to mark them? I'm replacing my axle & was just wondering, cause it doesn't matter if I mark them the new axle was never on the car. Help?
