If the TCT was removed and held back with a nut/bolt combo, the TCT piston can still come out. If the bolts are tightened and the piston is too far out, it will compress the chain guide like a vise. The piston will not go back without manually doing so with the retractor bolt. This is how it can be installed incorrectly.

we finally dug into the engine. the timing chain is fine; our initial diagnosis was wrong. what isn't fine is that the #2 valves broke and completely tore apart the cylinder. the end of the spark plug was sheared off, and shining a flashlight down into the cylinder shows major damage to the piston top. sigh. i will post more when we get the head off. (that is, if i determine its even worth it; everyone seems to be telling me that the engine is toast, so why spend the time figuring out what happened? i'm going to focus my attention on replacing the engine, not diagnosing what went wrong with this one.)

anyone have a line on a used or rebuilt AP2 engine?

by the way, i spoke to alex at Ballade Sports, who had offered to give me advice. he was extremely knowledgable and helpful. for those of you lucky enough to live nearby, i would guess he is an excellent resource for information and, i assume, an excellent shop for work on your S2K. unfortunately, he is around 400 miles away from where i live (SF bay area), so working with his shop is going to be a challenge.
