i agree! I change mine every 2500 miles or earlier depending on how its been driven, this might seem excesive but i'm anul.
Trust me - I used to be there. At least until Road Rage and the folks at Oil Analyzers set me straight with the facts. I still get the lecture with 5,000 - 7,500 mile oil change intervals.
Shorter oil change intervals actually do more harm than good - due to the fact your first start up following an oil change is basically completely dry, for up to 6 times as long as a normal start.
This is also why I ensure I fill my filter with oil when during the change process. It's amazing how much oil the filter will hold - without spilling any during the spin-on process.
It takes your oil pump several seconds to work oil through a dry filter during that first start up - which is hell on your engine. Extending your drain interval actually can greatly reduce wear - especially when you use a top quality synthetic.
I can see changing oil more frequently if you've taken it to the track (not just hard driving - but true track workouts where you rip through a set of tires!). Otherwise (regardless of the type of oil you're using) you're simply wasting your money and natural resources (your increased demand drives up the costs - what the oil companies love to see!).
