maintenance light just came on

My recommendations:
1) Buy an owner's manual and/or a Helm service manual
2) Read the manual(s)
3) Read the handy FAQ thread that is a sticky at the top of this forum.
But since you asked, the Maint Req. light is simply a reminder light that comes on every 6k miles or so. It does not know what has been done to the car or what services are needed. It is up to YOU to maintain a service history of the car and to decide upon a service frequency that best fits your usage. If you do not know the complete service history, I'd do all fluid changes and maintenance items that YOU decide are called for and then start a regular maintenance program.
Without knowing how many miles are on the car, what services have been done in the past, and when and at what mileage they were performed, it is impossible to give a specific recommendation.

doc, the car has 17K miles. I guess my question is, if your car is at 17K what type of service would you do to your car? check air filter, engine coolant, etc...?
I've done all the oil changes and replaced the airfilter myself since I've gotten the car at 10K miles. The tires are still ok. I guess I'll just reset the maintenance light and see what happens.

I'll try to answer:
Your last "severe" service should have been at 15K miles. Your next one will be at 18.75K miles.
Your last one included a LOT of inspections AND an air cleaner replacement and a diff fluid change.
Your next one requires only oil and filter change.

And to add to xviper's advice:
If "all oil changes" means engine, transmission, and differential oil, then those service items are taken care of. In my car, I replace the engine oil every 4-5k miles, the transmission and differential oil at 5k miles and then every 10-15k after that. If the car is 2 or more years old, I'd also change the coolant and brake fluid. Plus, all of the correct inspections and lube services should have been performed at 15k miles.
