maint. light @ 27k
hey guys. anyways just got back from the honda dealer, i asked them about the engine maint. light and he told me i would have to come in and they would charge a fee and all this and i just had my oil changed by them at about 26k miles. he told me at 30k miles there is a "big one" where it costs about 300 bucks for them to do "some stuff" to the car. anyways just wanted to hear it from you guys.
is the engine maint. light JUST for the oil? or does it include others?
Also, do you guys know by any chance what hes talking about with the 30k mile check up and what they do?
Thanks guys
Brandon

never heard of anything like this before. i think they are trying to make money off of you. from what i know that maintenence light is just for oil change reminders and the usual tune-up. but im not totally sure.

This sounds like what they tried to do to my girlfriend. She has an '06 mazda3, and when she hit the 21000 kilometer mark, they told her it would cost around $200. I got the list of things they were going to do, and I laughed.
1. Change oil
2. Check all fluid levels
3. Lube/check disc brakes
4. Check that all lights were working
5. Rotate tires
Needless to say, I told them to do only the oil change.
About 3 weeks later, she gets this 'coupon' in the mail from Mazda, telling her they are offering a 'winter prep' checkup for $59.99 (this included all the above). I laughed again.
I think the only maintanence you need to do on a car when it's brand new is the kind that involves the warranty. Other than that, these dealerships love to ripoff honest customers.
So, if Honda is charging you $300, make sure they aren't taking your money and throwing a lunch party with it.

Read the owners manual. The maint req'd light is JUST FOR OIL. NOTHING else. If you recently changed the oil, just reset it. The dealer is blowing smoke up your ass.. Certainly Honda does recommend a 30k service (or close to it), but this has absolutely nothing to do with that light.

The Maint Req'd light is just a mileage counter. Its primary purpose is to remind you to change the oil every 7500 miles (or whatever the interval is).
However, the maintenance schedule does include additional things that you should do at 15K, 30K, etc, etc. I believe the maintenance schedule is printed in your owner's manual. If not, you should be able to get a copy (free) from your Honda dealer.
At 30K miles, most of the maintenance stuff should fall under "inspection"... ie, inspect belts for wear, inspect, inspect brake pads/rotors, etc. Maybe replace in-cabin filter, air filter, etc.
