LSD is going bad
So i have finally figured out what is wrong with my diff. it seems that the LSD on it is about to go boom. the clunking is getting somewhat louder and you can feel it lock up and feel it through the shifter. i get the ticking and clunking noises at low speeds when making turns and going reverse.
i never had this problem before until i bought a used diff to get built. it seems that the LSD on that diff was already on its last leg and its about to go on me. but anyways i have a few questions.
When the time comes and the LSD goes dead will i still be able to drive the car?
Cant i just buy another LSD unit and remove and replace myself?
.
Thanks!

I've driven many s2ks with the same noise. The LSD unit is sticking. It does not affect operation and will be fine.
You hear it when you coast into a parking space, low speed, wheel turned sharp.

Bill, what causes that? I think I have the same thing and I'm worried that my dif is going to grenade. Hearing the noise and feeling the clunk through the seats is what prompted me to change the axles, thinking the CV joints were going bad.

what fluid are you using? i had this issue, same as what Billman described (noise at sharp turns, going slow, etc. ) and i found a few threads where ppl switched fluids and the noise went away. I was using one of the recommended 75w90 from the forums and on my second change it started making the clunking noise. I changed to Motul 90PA based on other's experience with the same issue and haven't had any issues since. probably put 10k miles on the Motul and no sounds or sticking feeling at all.
