Lowering VTEC engagement
Can the '06 (drive by wire) VTEC engagement rpm be electronically lowered withOUT going to an aftermarket ECU? Can the stock ECU be flashed to make this change?
Red line comes waaaaaaay too fast once VTEC engages! The 3000 rpm VTEC range in the AP1 is only 2000 rpm in the AP2 and I'd like the extra 1000 rpm range. Say kick in about 5000 rather than 6000. I've seen guys post 5100 rpm makes a very smooth transition. Car would still cruise on the low cam at 85mph.
She's "in the barn" off the ground and under cover until spring so if I need something like the Hondata and a dyno tune I can start putting money aside for the next few months.

The stock cat plays a huge part when lowering the vtec engagement point. If you do a little bit of digging and reading here, the best answer will be to buy a Hondata Flashpro as well as a high flow cat or test pipe and then have a tune or e-tune done to lower the vtec.

^this. But note if you can't do the hfc now, and don't want to do a test pipe (for legal/enviro issues), you can lower a bit with the stock cat. Then later you could add the hfc and retune the flashpro.
Many e tuners will reflash for free or cheap when you add mods.

If you go this route (I am leaning in this direction) what are the negatives leaving the stock cat?

With a test pipe you will have a noticeable decrease in cabin drone from the exhaust system, and due to losing the restriction of the catalytic converter, you will be able to lower your vtec engagement point substantially
