Some of the tracks they ran were short, temporary street courses. The street circuit races typically lasted 30 minutes. PJ Jones used to slide the car around, build a big lead, and then win the race.
Paul Tracy drove pretty aggressively to win 8 of the 9 ARS races I think in the 1990 Championship Year. Paul may have won all 9 races if he hadn't been knocked out on the first lap of one of the 9 races.
I think sliding the car on a short, tight road/street course is a great way to negotiate the tight 90 degree corners
As long as the race is timed at 30 minutes, tires shouldn't be an issue.

You and I use our cars quite differently, and have totally different goals, and it's nice to compare notes.
I'm actually SHOCKED to find anyone who thinks that an S2000 on OEM tires has too much roll in the corners, but if it bothers you, you obviously know how to fix it.
What people need to see in this is that what works for one person and situation may not work as well for them, in their situation. My car is really not well suited for high speed track use, because it's been tweaked for lower speed autocross use. Even if you are autocrossing, and autocross at the same venues I do, my setup still might not be right for your driving styles or goals. If you're running R compound tires (just as an example) you would NOT want the thin walled center section in your Gendron FSB, you'd want either the thick wall or sold center section. If you're tracking the car, even on the OEM tires, the thin walled center section might well still be too soft, but at the softest setting it's just what I need on the tight autocrosses I run (given the grip I'm getting form the S02's). My setup works for me. I'm sure RACER has his car tweaked so that his setup works well for him. His favorite FSB would probably be a dissaster on my car, and my Gendron wouldn't be enough for his car, so you can't just copy what others do. When it comes to anti sway bars, you have to decide how you want to change the handling (because it WILL change) and pick bar rates that achieve the desired goal. If you just by brand X because some tuner says it's the cats meow, then your results are basically a crap shoot.
