you have the run the engine a bit after the oil change or the oil will read higher than it otherwise would.
in any event, losing 2-3 notches at 400 miles is at the upper limit of acceptable oil consumption for ap1's

Amsoil FTW, if im burning any then it is very very unnoticable. No TCT problems or anything since I went to Amsoil!

Mobil 1 is around a 8.4 I believe
Theres alot of talk about in BITOG, Mobil wont release some data sheets while Amsoil openly hands you the info you want. Silence = short commings they dont want you to see. Mobil 1 is cheaper and I used to use it, now that im with Amsoil, I wouldnt go back.

I'm thinking that the relative high consumption of oil in AP-1's is normal.
It was normal for the relatively high reving small block Corvettes in the 80's and probably beyond. These engines were purposely built a little looser than the standard 350. I'm also thinking that engine build technology improved by the time the AP-2s were introduced and thus little or no oil consumption noted with these engines.
My old Corvette L-82 which was bought new, used a quart of oil every 1000miles and this was considered normal. The AP1 guys can relax a little and except that fact the oil consumption is a normal function of owning this car. I didn't come to these conclusions on my own. You can read all over these forums about the high oil consumption of AP-1s. ---Conclusion, AP-1 guys check your oil frequently and often and perhaps maintaining the oil on the high mark on the dipstick.

My AP1 burns about a quart of oil every 1500 miles. This is normal for sure, but by contrast my civic si burns about... 1/2 a quart every 5k miles and revs to 8600.
And i practically have to beat my g/f in the head to check the oil on the car. I've shown her how multiple times, and she still doesn't do it.

A friend of mine recommended me to change to 5w40 or use Royal Purple(I think that's what it's called).
I think I might take it to a shop to see if everything's normal. What should I check for if I do?
I've only had an intermediate service done at Honda since I bought it, and a mechanic had it raised up and he visually inspected the underside of the car (said the car was straight and nothing wrong, cept some bar rubbing against the brake) due to some weird sound from the rear but that didn't have anything to do with the oil problem. Other than that I haven't had the engine inspected or anything.

At 500 miles, its at the L mark now. I think I'll try 5w40, but can I just add it in or do I have to drain the leftover 10w30, then put it in? Or is mixing a different brand of 10w30 better?
