Default Low oil, it is normal right?

I drove about 800 miles since I last checked the oil level, which was at 5 notches on the stick. Checked it today and it was at the L level. I added a qt of oil but I should probably add more? I'm using Mobil 1 10w30 on an '02. I have about 1000 miles before an oil change but since the oil is low already should I just do an oil change now?

Is the oil supposed to drop so fast in such a short amount of driving? In the 800 miles I've driven, I went past 6k RPMs about 6-7 times, only from rolling to 70MPH (freeway on-ramp), 1st, 2nd, then back off into 3rd 4th 5th 6th. Normally I shift at 3.8k-4.8k but generally 3.5-4k in traffic.

If it's not normal for the oil to drop so fast, would upgrading the valve cover fix the problem? The car used to have a catch can but the smog guy removed it cause it was illegal. Or do I just have to periodically add oil every so often. I don't track or go to twisties (yet), just daily it for now.

a) Yes it's normal for the oil to drop that fast, but you need to check it more frequently so you don't run yourself dry. I go through a quart every 600 - 1000 miles easy. You don't need to change the oil now, just top it up.

b) Only 6 or 7 times into VTEC in 800 miles? You need to stop driving like such a damn sissy! If want to to drive it like a Prius why not just buy a Prius?

The more oil you burn the newer the oil in your car (as you top up). You can go longer between changes if you are putting in 1qt every 1K. This would mean 7 new qt of oil in 7500 miles. Replacing the oil 1.5 times.

Haha, I don't VTEC til I find a reason to. But mainly I drive in slow traffic (usually 55 mph flow -_-) so I don't get a chance to. It'd be pointless to accel fast the slam the brakes =O.

So no matter what I do the oil will just drop that quickly?

krank vents (or dual supra pcv valves) will reduce your oil consumption to nearly zero.

however, i don't like that it was constantly sucking on the seals.

so, yea, i top off my oil very frequently, and because of that, i extend the change interval as well...to about twice as long if not more.

Yup. As a rule of thumb you should check the oil every second time you fill the gas tank. You're supposed to check the oil when it is hot, so at the petrol station is the best place to do it.

I'd try a different oil. Some cars just drink certain brands/weights of oil.

It is well documented that our cars tend to burn mobil 1.

Do you let your car sit for a while on level ground before you check?

From low to high should only need 1 quart

Also, if your burning 1 quart every 1000 miles, you have a issue with your car. Unless those 1000 miles are track miles

Try Krank Vents. My AP2 doesn't burn a drop of Mobil 1, even at the track.
