Default Lousy Honda - thermostat fails at 148k

OK, just kidding, this kind of thing should be expected at my mileage. The interesting part is that I wouldn't have found the failure until possibly experiencing a real 'breakdown' if I didn't have a 'modifried' temp gauge. During my 'overheating' experience the temp never hit 235 - the point at which a stock gauge indicates 4 bars. I only knew it was abnormal because of the gauge modification.

I've been running my ECT module* for 7 months and know exactly how the gauge works - 3 bars in cool weather, jumps to 4 bars with extended idling, then back to 3. Hot weather brings more 4-bar time, even see 4 bars at steady 40mph if ambient temp is over 90

[QUOTE=modifry,Jul 13 2005, 09:29 PM] A stock gauge reads 3 bars between 160

I would love to see factory specs, I'm going by what the OBD says.

Exactly where I got he first few numbers.. I correlated OBD numbers with the gauge on my car (and just projected to get the 6 - 7 bar estimates). I am thinking the pieces are not high precision and that my Hondata gasket may make my numbers a little different.. although they are logical if you look at thermostat and fan specs.

148k miles? damn, I love hearing that. As been stated by many, it's nice to know the S seems to be just as reliable as you would expect from a Honda even with the high strung engine. Keep up the good work man and be safe at the track!!

148k miles only ? Honda thermostat should last the life of the car or 500k miles whichever comes last. Honda owners should only fill-up gas tank when needed and may be oil change every 50k miles or so, no other maintenance is needed. j/k

When should I expect my car to jump to 4 bars?

I've NEVER seen it happen ever. I'm at around 16k miles...

With a stock ECU, if you ever see 4 bars it probably means your engine is already ruined. What appears to be a useful gauge is really just an "oh shit" light.

How often our S has to replace coolant anyway? Every 30,000 miles?
