Before anyone has a chance to come in and be an asshole, the timing chain tensioner (TCT).

Here's a DIY on it https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/808...ent-or-repair/
And a vid for comparison:

I don't think that's the issue the OP is describing.

If you're getting that grinding sound at cold start up that lasts about a half second it's most likely your starter. Seems to be a normal issue with many s2ks. It's your starter still touching the flywheel after it cranks over for a quick second. You can change the starter but the sound will most likely come back. Not the end of the world and I think most owners just learned to live with it until a more permanent solution is made.

if its very cold I can guarantee its the starter. Mine does the same thing, sometimes gets stuck and I have to tap the starter with a long wrench, afterwards it doesn't grind only on the first start of a cold morning usually near 31* or below. Is it the same kind of noise if your car is running and you push the start button?

Its your starter been struck and not retracting fast enought so it gets grind by the flywheel. Usually normal. If you like you can remove your starter and clean around the teeth where it pops out and retract. We just get use the grinding sound.

I changed my starter out 3 1/2 years ago and the grinding in cold weather hasn't returned.

Does anyone know what the actual cause of this problem is? Is it the bendex sticking or is it an issue in the solenoid?
