Default Loud Transmission at Speeds >10 mph

01 S2000.

Newbie here...

Just picked up the car and did not notice during test drive (even with top up)...

I have read a bunch of threads that the drive trains are noisy in these cars and that clutch replacement helps with deceleration noise in 2nd and 3rd gears.

However, my transmission makes a sound at all speeds greater than 10 mph. Sounds like a heat shield resting on the drive shaft.

I jacked the car up and got the drive train moving about 30 mph and the noise is clearly coming from the transmission.

Clutch engaged or disengaged. In gear or out of gear. As long as the drive shaft is spinning, the noise is there.

Fluid level OK.

Is this common? Is it something to be worried about? Solutions?

Likely bad tailshaft bearing.

It can be replaced without pulling the trans.

Sounds like a very reasonable diagnosis. It did appear to be coming from the tail of the trans.

Can you recommend a shop manual.

I have had VW/Audi's for years (OK, take your shots now) and on the advice of a respected friend switched over to the S2000. In the VW world, we live by Bentley shop manuals.

Is there a preferred shop manual for the S2000?

Thanks again!!

There is only one factory shop manual, it is by helms. You can usually find them on Ebay for a bit cheaper than list price.

There is also a scanned pdf copy for MY01-03 that is floating around the internet.

For the manual Google "Helm Inc.". It is the O.E.M. Manual contracted to them by Honda. For the '01 there are actually 3 manuals; shop, electrical, and body repair. The shop is the most useful. Billman is a long time trusted member here and has forgotten more then most will ever know so you can be fairly confident in his diagnosis.
