Question Loud grinding noise from the rear (differential?)

before i start here, i did try and search but couldnt really find anything. if some can find any threads regarding this please let me know and sorry in advance if thats the case.

anyways, a couple days ago im stopped at a red light. light turns green and i take 1st gear a little past 6000 rpms and do a quick shift into 2nd....instant grinding and then i get the gear in all the way and let the clutch out. nothin happens. rev's are falling down to 1000 as if im in neutral.

thinking that maybe ive lost 2nd gear now, i try and shift to third and same thing happens. car is rolling as if im in neutral still. and i continue to try every gear and same goes for all of them.

put on my hazards and pull over to the side of the road. so now...the car is still on, idling normally at 1000rpm. i put the gear into first and and try and pull off, car doesnt move at all but as soon as im about to release the clutch all the way there is a very loud cyclical grinding noise from the rear. im guessing the differential!?!? or maybe axles?!?!..i have no idea. i try 2nd gear and same thing.

the car will simply not move at all in any gear. but the car does roll (car was rolling backwards slightly).

the only thing i can think of is the differential is done for (7 years now). and to make things worse ive been practising my shifting for awhile. ive been chirping my 2nd --> 3rd shifts (with crappy tires btw). and im pretty sure that wasnt good for the diff or drivetrain.

but the car is at the shop right now. im guessing there busy considering its been 2 days now and no news yet. my dad is friends with the owner of the shop so were just waiting to see whats wrong with the car.

can any of you guys give me some input on what you think it might be?!?!

thanks in advance.

btw, its MY2000. with about 160,000 kms

Inboard CV or diff.
Because the car still rolls you may be lucky wih it being one of the inboard CV spiders.
If the splines are ok you only need a new spider.

Let us know what happens.
