Lost my oil cap
#21
well, the OP said the "CEL" illuminated. The oil cap falling off and the subsequent splashing of oil would not trigger a CEL....
Unless he meant the oil light came on.... but then again, how in the world would enough oil escape thru there to make the engine malfunction?
Only theory would be the splashing oil getting on some sensor or something related to the emissions controls.

I drove my car without the cap once, and nothing happen. I was dying inside but the car seemed fine. And no, theres no such thing as a cel for no oil CAP, unless enough oil escapes, come to think of it i dont think that would give you a cel. Just find or buy a CAP and reset your ECU, if it comes up again then scan for the code. Oh and fill up your engine with the correct amount of oil.

Does anyone know how I would go about cleaning the engine bay? There is oil behind the engine.

Thanks guys I got a new cap because I am lazy. The error code was for auxiliary emissions (gas cap) and was unrelated. Going to put the car on jacks tomorrow to get the old cap out because I can hear it rattling around, especially while the car is accelerating. I will check the places you guys mentioned.
Thanks again guys
