Default Loose Gas Cap

My gas cap keeps coming loose and giving me a CEL. It has happened twice this month. I tighten it to "3 clicks" just as I always have. It has never been an issue until very recently.

Will a new gas cap fix the problem?
Thanks.

yes it would.
i have the same problem. bought a new gas cap and it fixed the issue.
once you put on the new cap, either reset the cel or wait a couple of days for it to clear.
pm if you have any other questions.

02 has a very common problem with the filler neck threads not matching the cap threads.

The root cause is the filler neck and the only true solution is a new neck. A new cap will help but the problem will come back.

As a temp (or permanent for me) for you can tighten the cap by holding the outside of the cap rather than the build in handle. You will feel it get tight as it binds on the threads, it will then loosen up and turn some more before actually bottoming out.

There's actually a TSB for this. Or, you could just over tighten the the cap every time like i do.

At times, it'll click but if you keep going it stops clicking, then when the click comes back, you can tell its on right.

You'll need to replace the filler neck.

You need a new cap and a filler pipe.
