The problem seems to occur when things are fully warmed up, for several hours at a time. Classic problem mode for electronic components that are failing in slow motion.

Poor spark aligns with the reported symptoms, won't rev. Spark getting worse aligns with the lower and lower artificial redline.

My guess is the fixes the mechanic did made the car run better because they weren't ideal (like the valve adjustment), but probably didn't contribute to the root cause. Well, except for maybe the #4 coil pack.

Replacing all coil packs sounds like a plan.

If that doesn't resolve it, I'd hunt for other electronic components that could contribute to poor spark. Nothing comes immediately to mind, would need to research on that.

The dealership recommendations? About what I've come to expect from dealer service. At least $1k quote, and all stuff that totally makes no sense. Ignore.

I believe the 8th gen si coil packs work in the S2K. I think I saw an Evan's tuning video where he talked about using those and they're cheaper.

The easy way to test a coil is to take the one from the misfiring cylinder and swap it with a coil on a cylinder that isn't misfiring. If the misfire follows the coil then that coil is bad. I replaced my coils a couple of years ago with Denso 6732301 ($32 on amazon; less than half the price of the coil that's a fit for the S2000) and they work as intended. Since you say the mechanic replaced coil 4 I wonder what cylinder the misfire was on the 2nd time this issue came up.

If you find yourself back in SC around Greenville and need a mechanic, you might give Sandlappers Automotive on W. Butler Rd, Mauldin, a try. They've always done good work on mine, tell it like it is, and are fair on cost.
Dick Brooks Honda dealership let the ball drop on service and emptied my bank account. I won't be back there!

Around halfway through the trip the car would start breaking up in higher RPMs, I started to avoid high RPMs because of this, and eventually the car wouldn't let me go above 6k, then 5k and so on. it got to the point where I could not accelerate at all. Restarting my ecu by pulling the fuze would solve the problem for a short while only to come back the same way, this was repeated multiple times. Eventually this all caused a misfire on cyl #4 light that went away after restarting the ecu. Once I got home I took it to my mechanic who replaced the plugs, #4 coil pack, #1 injector, the MAP sensor, and did a valve adjustment. The car ran perfect afterwards, better than it ever has since I have owned it. 3 weeks of normal driving no problems, until I had to drive to SC, around 13 hours. 6 hours into the trip the problem came back, the same way as before. And I handled it the same way as before by repeatedly restarting the ecu until I got to where I was going. Now in SC without a trusted mechanic I took it to a dealership, I spent around $300 for them to tell me there is a problem and for them to suggest to replace the vtec solenoid and almost every part of the intake system. They quoted me above a grand for all this service, so I left. Still the car has the same problems, but only when driving over 2 hours. Also to note the car has been idling rough since this all started.

Happy to answer any questions, I just want my car to run right. Thanks in advance

not sure if it’s the same problem i had. It would happen like twice a year. But for me it was the throttle position sensor. The connector wouldn’t make contact that great. So i would unplug it and plug it back in. Make sure it’s tight. Also idk if you’ve tried the MAP whack. Just something to try before spending money. I also had to zip tie the map sensor and connector

Default Airflow Map Sensor

The connector on the AFM can come loose and on earlier models.needs a specialised zip tie to hold it in place

I agree as many have already said. Likely a coil pack has failed especially at the mileage and age.
