Lifespan of Front / Rear Brake Pads
I'm coming up on 40k miles and my front brakes started squeeking a bit. I thought it was brake dust but it seems to be slowly getting worse. Could it be time for a brake pad change? If so, should I do the front and rear, or do the rear last longer than the fronts? Also can anyone recommend who has the pads at the best price?
Thanks
Chris

It could be.
Try a few hard braking exercises on some open road. 40mph-zero should do it. That normally gets some of the squeak out temporarily.
Take off the wheels and check the thickness of the pads, or have a dealer take a look at them. Change the front axle, rear axle, or both if they are worn.

I have to respectfully dissagree with the last comment regarding hard braking exercises, If you are down to the rivets and it sounds like you might be - Hard braking will not be too rotor friendly, It is time to change your pads - I had about 35k when mine were shot and replacement pads are a personal choice! you can go with OEM or do some research - you have a great resource right near you with Andie Lin, he operates Cobalt Friction Technologies in Ft. Lauderdale "cobaltfriction.com" 877-562-9237 call or write him and he will help you with your decision - I went with the Ultimate Axxis pads front and rear and I love them! low dust better bite than stock.

OEM pads have a noise maker built into them that produces a squeek when its time to change them. This may be what you are hearing.
Do some research here on brake pads while giving some thought to how you plan on using your car in the future and let that be your guide to replacement pad selection.

The S2KI Marketplace sells OEM's for less than that.
$33.99 for fronts and $41.99 for rears. http://www.gofastlab.com/s2ki/customer/pro...4&cat=25&page=1
We also carry the Axxis Ultimates and a variety of Hawk and Cobalt pads at a substantial discount. Check us out at marketplace.s2ki.com or just click on the marketplace link in the nav bar at the top of the site.

The best way to see if you need new brake pads is to simply look at them. If there is only a little bit of material remaining between the backing and the rotor, it's probably time for a change. OEM pads would be fine, but for my money, Hawk HPS pads are fantastic. I've had experience with them on many cars (some mine, some not) and the difference over stock is phenomenal. They cost a little more, but you can never have too much braking performance. Stay safe!
