It's hard to prove what happened 1st, did the pump fail catastrophically and take out the rods, or did the rod take out the pump when it exited the block. There are 2 thrown rods, #1 and #2. The oil pump sits lower in the engine than the rod throws, where the damage is. The pump is submerged in the oil pan. Main and rod bearings are the 1st to be oiled from the pump. If the pump was the 1st to fail the damage would be localized to the pump.

If the pump pickup was blocked with debris, say from a damaged bearing the pump's inlet would be restricted and the output pressure and volume would be low. Thus further reducing the oil supply to the rest of the engine.

Was the engine ever run low on oil? This could have damaged bearing and caused a restricted pickup.

There are too many variables to draw a conclusion from sweetJ's pics.

I guess you're right, Slow... I was guessing seizure at the bearings due to oil starvation, but I guess it's hard to know.

I didn't see any pictures of the oil pump.

[QUOTE=xviper,Sep 30 2006, 03:09 PM] It's odd how some people consider that the odds of a car part failure has such a great chance of happening when they consider the odds of winning the lottery are so grim.

well this is a concern that any car owner would have. maybe a little moreso with a car that dabbles in high rpms. thanks for your reponses.

I also seem to recall some redesign of the oil pump at some point during the life of the car. As an MY02 owner, I know my car has 4-hole oil bolts, but not a new pump.

Does anyone have specifics about the redesigned part and/or is this perceived weakness of the original part just bunk?

Thanks. Your conclusion was metallurgical differences only. OK, that might be significant in and of itself, but it's good to know there was no specific functional difference. OK, I'm a little more at ease here leaving my oil pump in for another 50K miles.

We're going to do a pressure test on the oil anyway. If that looks normal, we'll stick with the existing pump.
