after reading a post in this forum recently about an oil pump failure and the terrible resulting damage i began to think about how long we should go before it is replaced. i assume this would be expensive but is it worth looking into considering the possible problems a bad oil pump could cause?

it should last the life of the car....like many other parts.
I would not worry about it, just keep up with regular maintenance

An Oil pump failure is the exception not the rule. I've never seen a failed pump from a S2000. If the engine pitched a rod, it's hard to prove what broke 1st. Was it the connecting rod or the connecting rod going through the oil pump.

You'd be better off buying a new car every 3 years than to replace every part that may cause a failure.

It's odd how some people consider that the odds of a car part failure has such a great chance of happening when they consider the odds of winning the lottery are so grim. In as much as an oil pump would fail, I put it in the same catagory as winning the lottery. Somebody's oil pump will fail, just as somebody will win the lottery. I'm not staying up nights worrying about it.

In many years I have never seen an oil pump failure. It is a well lubricated part built for a single well understood function. I would think any failure would have to be associated with oil contamination unless it is an extremely rare manufacturing defect. I personally question the conclusion that it was the root cause of the failure.

But it's still the "best" lubricated part. It gets the oil first.

I've also heard similar concerns about the quality of the Honda oil pump that sodaking mentioned.

I also seem to recall some redesign of the oil pump at some point during the life of the car. As an MY02 owner, I know my car has 4-hole oil bolts, but not a new pump.

Does anyone have specifics about the redesigned part and/or is this perceived weakness of the original part just bunk?
