Leakdown Test Results - Please Help
I am looking to buy an S2000 and had a leakdown test performed during the inspection.
The car is a 2002 with 24k miles.
The leakdown tests results were 8% 8% 6% 8%.
This seems a little high to me. But what should the results be? I know 5-10% might be ok for a normal car but was expecting between 1-5% on an S2000.
The car had a leakdown test done at 10k miles a year and a half ago. The results then were 4% 2% 4% 2%. The jump worries me.
Can someone give me some advice on this?
Thanks so much,
- Dan

Ok thanks for those results. Those are about the same as the car I had inspected at 10k.
Does anyone have any results from their leakdown tests at or around 20-30k?
Thanks

Do you know if the leakdown was done with a cold or warm motor. If these were hot values I would be concerned as 8% is a reasonable amount of leakage. With this amount of leakage I would normally have a listen to the inlet, exhaust and crankcase to work out where the air was going.
If these values are cold they are heading towards the upper end of what I would consider acceptable. Normally leakdown reduces with a hot engine as the piston is larger.
Hope this helps.

The jump would worry me too. If the car only 10K miles ago had leakdown numbers that are half what they are now, I'd say that was a sign of premature wear. On the other hand, it could be the engine finally breaking in. They are still less than 10% which is normally a good limit before rebuilding.
It's really a tossup. They aren't horrible numbers, but they aren't great either. Is the rest of the car in good shape of does it have other signs of wear?

Hi Guys,
Many thanks for the feedback.
The car is in pretty good shape. It hasn't been beat on.
This is kind of strange. The owner says that he never had to insert any oil between oil changes. Is this abnormal? I understood that these cars burnt up to a quart of oil every 1500 miles.
The owners justification for this is that the car was only driven over 6000rpm for a very short period every day and spent most of its time commuting. He says that it will only burn oil over 6000rpms.
Has this been the experience of others?
Thanks,
