Default Late VTEC engagement when cornering

Hi guys and gals,

I've noticed a worrying problem recently. Lets say I'm stationary waiting to make a turn, either direction. I pull away in first gear, and nail it after the apex. What I've noticed lately is that I'll be pulling about 7500 rpm as I'm straightening up and then the VTEC engages with a much more noticable surge than if you were just moving off in a straight line.

This is really worrying me as it seems the VTEC is not engaging at the point it should as I'm pushing round the corner.

Is this a common trait, has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks.

Jezz.

Perhaps you are confusing the VTEC Xover point with where the engine actually begins to pull (2.0s about 7000+)

VTEC is prevented from engaging if oil pressure is not up I believe. Is it possible that you are slightly low on oil, and that the Gs from the corner are preventing the oil from being sufficient until you straighten out?

You should check the oil level as well, just like 98TypeR#21 mentioned before. I had only once faced a similar problem but on straight when V-TEC didnt engage at all, due to low level oil.

...... the 2.0 liter S2k pulls AT the vtec cross over point at about 6000rpm. where on earth do you get 7000 from??

joefish, check your oil level. that's the most likely cause.

My guess is oil level as well.

The only other situation that caused late VTEC engagement for me was driving at high altitudes, like 5000 to 7000 feet. Are you at your normal elevation?

Thanks for the responses guys, I checked the oil (which is a drama in itself trying to get a solid reading) but the oil is fine.

I've actually been out doing a whole bunch of hard corners from stationary to investigate the problem and I don't think it's the VTEC at all. After a few times listening carefully the VTEC is definitely changing over at the point that it should.

Could it be something wrong with the clutch or the rear diff? As I already mentioned the problem does not exist in a straight line, it's pulls cleanly all the way through to the redline, and I would expect if the clutch was slipping or something it would happen in a straight line as well?. As it happens only on corners I'm thinking it could be the rear diff? I dunno?

Thanks, Jezz.

I bet after your next oilchange it will be fine.

This happend to me when I was at the track last time. on this one turn as soon as i would be mid to end of the apex the car would delay on the vtec change over from 6k to 7-7.5k (i had changed the oil 2000 miles before that)

Then I changed the oil and haven't had that problem since then. I agree its the oil.
