K&N Filter tests

Most oil analysis labs will recommend that you use a paper filter instead of the oiled gauze type (K&N). They see the same phenomena as the original poster stated in the equipment tested, but on a much larger sampling. But, in all fairness to K&N, their type of filter doesn't really effectively start filtering dirt until the filter itself stats filling up with dirt. They even state this in their literature (instructions).
I do use a K&N air filter in my S2000, and I'm aware of the possible downside. I've done UOA's at 15K and 30K and have not seen elevated silicon levels or increased wear metals compared to other S2000 UOA's so far. But, if I ever do, the K&N comes off and the OEM goes back in.

I remember seeing a test done on K&N filter as well as numerout other filters where they put a white cloth behind the filter to see if any dirt got past the filters.
K&N was worst and OEM was best, All other manufacturers came close to K&N in visibly dirty white cloth behind the filter element.

K&N isn't the end-all/be-all of air filters. There are plenty of alternatives out there.
When in doubt, go OEM. Honda chose paper because it's cheap and filters well.
