Default Just replaced my retainers due to over-rev

Hey guys, so I was at the track a few weeks ago and, somehow, I was accelerating out of a corner shifting from 3rd to 4th and I accidentally put it in 2nd gear and dropped the clutch from just a moment.

I punched the clutch in pretty quickly once I realized my mistake.

Well, tonight I changed out all of my intake retainers. They all appear to be in decent shape. One looked slightly stretched but nothing I would have freaked out about. I will change out the exhaust retainers tomorrow and post observations but I think I lucked out.

Anyway, just wanted to let you all know that it's not the end of the world when you have a bad mechanical over-rev.

Cheers,

Jorge

Oh, I didn't do a valve adjustment. I was only replacing retainers. Though, I probably should adjust the valves while I'm in there but I'll leave that for the off season.

I wouldn't bother with the exhaust retainers. If you don't have severely cracked intake retainers or bent valves - you almost certainly don't have damaged exhaust retainers.

I had Billman replace my intake retainers due to an over-rev in the 10,100 RPM ballpark (over-revved in 2004 - retainers replaced in 2008 - car was stored while I was overseas) - I had them replaced with AP2 retainers.
He was adamant that only the intake retainers needed to be replaced unless serious damage to the intake retainers, or evidence of bent valves was discovered. Like your car, only stretch marks were noted on the intake retainers and the exhaust retainers were left alone.

I would adjust the valves before driving the car again.

I'd agree with slipstream. I replaced all my intake retainers on my racecar last year. 5 of 8 were cracked, with one of those being 'failure imminent'. All the exhaust retainers looked pristine. I did the job myself with a leakdown tester to pressurize the cylinder to around 25-30lbs. It was tedious, and a little nerve-racking due to handling the little cotters and fearing that I'd drop one down into the engine. Lots of shop towels stuffed into every nook and cranny that a cotter can fall into, frequent breaks, and patience are the key, IMO.

Thanks for the advice guys.

What I don't get is how I didn't damage the retainers. I was in 2nd gear at like 90mph!

Can you post pictures?
Especially of the slighty stretched one.
Please

Was this your first ever overrev?

Did you catch it before you heard it bouncing off the rev limiter? you actually have a decent amount of time to catch your error if you're quick back on the clutch. It sounds as though you may have only let the clutch partially out before noticing your mistake, or the clutch slipped slightly (in your favor).
