When clutch is in its middle travel area, JUST at take up, you can moderatley feel and hear a noise that closely mimicks the engine vibration (normal engine vibration, but comming from an unusual source, if you get me).
Try this, put the clutch to the floor, leave the transmission in neutral, and rev the car to about 3k-4k RPMs. In my case I can hear this "engine vibration" or a "grumbling" sound and I can also feel it very slightly in the clutch pedal. Again, from what I have been able to gather, this is normal for our cars. Maybe one of the senior members can elaborate? Xviper?

Well, don't kniw if it's the same thing but, when I let off the clutch, if I don't give it enough gas on takeoff, where the engines lugs slightly, mine rattles too. I thought it was the timing chain tensioner but, I replaced it. I just make sure to give it enough gas now.
I suspect that my clutch with 53K miles on it's on the edge. I seem to detect a smidgen of slippage at some loads. I really don't know how well the previous owners drove with the clutch.
I was just kidding about pushing them out thing. Like all the 928's were broken or something (you know a person's rich when they have 3 cars up on blocks).

this is a useless reply and doesn't answer your initial problems but i had to comment about your 928. I own one with 28K miles on it. 1989 928 S4 5 spd. yep, a 5 spd! i guess it's a bit rare because my local porsche mechanic has never worked on a S4 5spd. I'm changing the diff and tranny oil this wknd (also changing on the S) since i'm noticing it stays in gear when shifting. it's like moving the shifter and nothing happens, feels like jello. it's very disturbing when you're at light and it's stuck in 3rd gear. perhaps you can PM me if you know any good 928 boards or perhaps even know where to start looking? word of caution for any potential 928 buyers.. its' $$ to maintain.
cheers to a fellow 928 owner.

Thanks again for the further responses. I think at 50k my clutch could also use some looking at, but this weekend is exhaust time in LA, so I will see after that. If I do clutch, I will do headers and short shifter at the same time. I have learned with the 928s to WYAIT, While you are in there.
I have been a diehard 928 person for about 6 years. I take them apart, and slowly put them back together. I have had an 81 auto, turned that from a 3spd to a 4 speed, parted that out, an 89 5spd, which was perfect, but I took it apart anyway, and thats on its way to its new owner, an 85 euro auto, very nice car, sold that in June. 86 5spd, 32V 5.0L, and that is being clesned up for sale, and I have the 78 5spd, which I will probably keep, since I took it down to bare metal on the entire body, and repainted it the infinity Dark Silver, code WV2. I have an 89 engine with all new or rebuilt stuff to put together when I have the space in the garage, and an entire interior, which I will have releathered with some suede and good hides. I already have the counter clockwise V-1 supercharger for that 928, and the aftermarket compuyter for it.
Thats why I bought the S2000. Its a honda. If I want to modify it, I will, but it will still be a nice, clean, well maintained daily driver. The steering is so quick compared to the 928s, and light too, but direct.
RE RYUs 928, DON'T BRING THE CAR to someone that has not worked on 928s - its not rocket science, but it is something someone should know about before doing stuff.
I am confused about your description of the shifting characteristics.
Simple on the boards: www.rennlist.com Largest Porsche online community in the world. The 928 has its own board, and its very active. I am BrendanC there too. We have the same type of FAQ stuff, but when you ask a good question, you don't get shot down like you do here for not searching first.
What are you putting in the rear end of the S2000?

Ricks Short shifter seems lik a good game plan when I do buy. I am watching the clutch carefully.
Stock is 4.10 right? And when you add a SC, the gearing would benefit from being longer instead of shorter, at least from my own expeirence (928s are 2.2, 2.54, 2.64, or 2.74), and when someone "boosts", they seem to want to go back down to 2.2.

You go longer if you want top-end. Even at Road America with what may be the longest straights in North America, you don't top out even with SC. But that 's not your average track. What's going to get you around faster is to come out of the corners faster and get to speed faster, thus, shorter gearing (torque).

3) Might want to check the torque on the axles. Manual says 180 ft/lbs but, honda changed it to 220 I believe. People report rear end "clicks" when it's loose.
According to my s2000 manual ( chapter 15 page 27 ) they say those 6 bolts ( 10x1.25 mm) are tensioned to 83nm....
When i enter 180ft/lbs in the torque converter, i get 243nm.. over 3 times the force you say. Do i calculate wrong or are we speaking of other bolts?
I have that same "click" when driving away after a stop and it's annoying me!
torque converter: Click to convert
Hope someone can help me out.

No, jack up the car. Pull off the wheel. Look at where the center cap was when the wheel was on the car. In the middle of the hub there is a "staked" 36 mm Outboard Spindle Nut. That's it.
