can you just buy the gear and install on s2000, or are there def parts needed?

No, you cannot just buy the ring and pinion and install it and think everything will work perfectly. You will also have to get the hardware kit from Honda with the new crush sleeve, shims, ect.. If you are asking about that I would highly recommend you have someone like Puddy build you a diff. There are very precise measurements you have to take, and it's not easy and it's not just with common hand tools really. Puddy will build you a diff for a very good price, and even give you a core exchange option and refund you some money if you send him your working old diff.
