JIC coilovers do need to be preloaded

Just the same, with the JICs (and probably most coilovers) all the coils are free until the spring is fully compressed. These are equally spaced straight rate coils.

Just got a set of these today, and have been following this thread along with other threads about JIC for a while now. I just want to thank those that have contributed to my learning about this topic. I'm by no means an expert, however, I feel at least I now have a general understanding thanks to this thread and its contributors. A special thanks to gernby and cdelena for answering specific question via PM.

Luis, it doesn't matter, the same coils are closed, or not, with the same weight on the spring ...... if anything, it might feel softer w/ more preload because the gas pressure in the shock is less if the shaft is further out (operating in a different range, still never hitting either end of the stroke).
This is reminding me of the crows-foot on a click-type torque wrench thread ..... was that one you? Or maybe it was the cooling rotor thread w/ one that had the cooling vanes swept backwards thread?

He preloaded his front springs 1 inch, which at their declared rate it's almost 200kgs. A front wheel carries about 320kgs when sitting still. He its a bump at 100km/h and the load goes from (hypothesis) 320 to 500 (hitting the bump) to 180 (off the bump) to 320kgs (stable state). When he is coming off the bump the number of free coils (assuming unequal coil spacing) can be different than what it would be had he less (or no) preload. This is my point. And I believe this may possibly contribute to different harshness perceptions.
Anyway, look at it positively... on the next disagreement you'll have another episode to quote on top of the vanes and the clicking wrench...
