Default It's not the valves....sound Experts HELPME!

Car has 90k on it, and only with the top up and window up, I hear this "flutter" sound ONLY:

#1 with Acceleration
#2 If car in in Neutral, sound is gone.
#3 If Car is in Neutral, and I give it gas 3-4K I can hear it.

It's not a tick, (valve got adjusted today) it's a flutter.

Sounds like if you roll your tongue and make a flutter, (like a distance water sprinkler with rotates around the parks and school) upon acceleration.

Now I'm running out of ideas, no check engine. I only have 1 option left.

Cam Tensioner

You guys think it could be #12??

I would hate to spend 150 bucks on this part and 1 hour labor.

Sounds Experts, give me some help!!

Thanks

you don't hear it at constant engine speed (ie #1 with accel)?

Tensioner noise can come and go, with no prefferece. It is USUALLY heard after a hot start, after sitting like 10 minutes. Or a cold start in the AM. Makes noise for a second or two then stops.

Sounds like a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle. Prolly 3X the speed of a valve tap.

I have one here a customer didn't pick up, I'll ship it to ya for a great price.

Yes I do. And its a constant sound during acc and gas. It comes and does not go. Sounds is consistant.

Hmmm... WHAT the heck could it be...

Let's try the 14510-PCX-005 (Cam Tensioner) 1st...... but by what you guys say..
I seems like this is not the problem...

I've had an intermittent problem similar to this (Billman, you may recall my asking you to comment). It's hard for me to get a sound clip since it only is heard when the engine is under load (letting the clutch out from a rest or acceleration). Something is still there on constant gas and deceleration but not nearly as loud. I was headed for the dealer the other day with the noise occurring when it stopped making the noise. DAMMIT!

If it's the tensioner, can it be verified by manually wiggling the tensioner?

DaveOnLI's tensioner was making constant noise in his AP2.

Hobokens2k's was making constant noise as well.

Mine was only in the AM when cold.

My second one is starting to make noise after hot start.

Tell you what....while it's idling, take a small hammer and lightly tap on the tensioner. I've done this with a few cars and the noise instantly stopped (piston must have retracted).

No, there's nothing to wiggle. You may be thinking of the belt tensioer, were talking about the chain tensioner...

I think I know what you are talking about, it kind of sounds like a mild hissing flutter sound that matches the engine's rpms and is ALWAYS there. My 03 has it. It's prety faint, so I assumed all was good. I only hear it with the top up at low speeds, otherwise it can't be heard above all the other noises.

Does anyone else have this?
