Intermittent Surging While In Vtec...
Well, my S2000 is having it's first driveability episode in 27k miles. While in VTEC, whether WOT or holding steady from 6-8k, the engine intermittently surges. It FEELS like the VTEC solonoid is kicking on and off, but not at that extreme. It's a mild surge, like it's dropping 20 hp on and off. I will get to the bottom of this eventually, and post what I find, but was hoping someone here had experienced something similar. I have already pulled the VTEC valve, checked the screen, checked the piston for free movement. I have ran it low on fuel and filled it with fresh Amoco, no change. Oil is on the full mark. This happens about 40% of the time while in VTEC. It seems to pull smoothly at WOT below 6k. So, If you have had something similar, or heard of someone who has, It would be most helpful. THANKS.....
I will hook it up to the scanner and run some datastream tonight. I wonder if the VTEC system on/off can be read with the datastream....
Progressive checklist...
..Oil is full, Mobil1 with about 500 miles
..VTEC valve/screen is clean, moves freely
..Fresh fuel, no change
..valves adj about 12k miles ago

I think I know exactly what your experiencing. My car did this for a month. I thought it was my clutch slipping through Vtec. It would do this every single time I hit Vtec. Then one day it stop, WTF! It pulled great all the way through Vtec. How is this happening?
I came home and did some researching and found the thread about the famous MAP SENSOR. Went to my car, gave the MAP SENSOR a couple of beatings and reseted the ECU.
My car pulls fantastic now, all the way through Vtec. Hope this helps for you.

Thanks for the reply bro, our problems sound very similar....Hooked up the scanner tonight to do some flight recordering; the dam car ran perfect all night. Maybe it was the quickie I did on the VTEC valve, who knows....I'll keep this updated if anything changes...

Billman, You can watch VTEC solenoid on with a Honda PGM-FI scan tool. I don't know what software/scanner you are using if it will be supported. I've had a flakey coil pack (caused by and oil leak) on another S intermittently bug out causing similar issues. The car had Misfire DTC's stored in history, and had oil leaking into the #2 spark plug tube, from the tube seal in the valve cover.

Thanks Slows2k, I'd really like to get my hands on a Honda pgm-fi. My Matco determinator $3500 scanner won't support the v-tec data....I'll try some figure 8's and see if I can get the problem to recur. BUMP...anybody else??
