K&N with proper oil (spray bottle ftw) + 5k mi oil/filter changes = you're golden when it comes to filtering air and oil. K&N lets in more dirt than OEM, but oil at 5k will have plenty of life left in it to handle it.

OEM paper filters cost $30 each, so its eaither $30/yr for a filter of $60 up front and spend the time to clean the K&N every 6 months. Its your call - $120 for OEM filters over four years or $60 for a K&N and cleaning kit and lets say 8 hours to clean it twice a year.

how can you say that when UOA analysis shows that K&N filters cause higher wear rate metals and silicone, as mentioned above?

is your statement based on assumption or analysis?

Which post are you referring to?

Imo, air filters help to keep oil from getting dirty, but its the oil that protecs the engine. A K&N, cleaned twice yearly, and a quality oil & filter changes at 5-6k mi should be fine. 5-6k is 67-80% of the Honda recommended schedule and a good match for a filter that lets in more dirt (and air).

There have been numerous UOAs posted on BITOG showing high wear metals using a K&N filter, along with the associated high silicon rates. Poor filtration doesn't result in engine failure. It results in the engine wearing out faster.
referring to the post above.

it doesn't appear to be oiled to me.

it looks like green paper...definitely does not look like there is oil on it.

I use a K&N filter and have not found silicon levels to be abnormally high on two UOA's. I do have concerns about long term use as it relates to fuel dilution as a result of a recent comment from Terry Dyson (Triboligist) of Dyson Analysis on a UOA I posted on BITOG for my G35:

"For you folks that follow our work, understand if you are using a oiled air filter or a leaking filter that dirt, lubricant, or liquid can migrate to the heated MAF screens and once it hits 600-800 F will become a nice laquer or varnish forever riching the system. Why MANY on this board and those I see in analysis have consistent fuel issues with what should be a perfect burner."

I may switch back to the stock filter soon and call it a day!

I'm glad I read this before purchasing K&N air filter. I'll be buying K&N FIPK Intake soon, hope there's nothing wrong with that one.
