Intakes...AEM, or K&N Typhoon?
Okay guys (and ladies too)-
What's the skinny on the best intakes? I know AEM has been at it for a long time, but the K&N Typhoon looks to be a killer product, especially the model 1040. I've been told by an online reseller that the K&N will provide between 12-15 extra horsepower, but that I'll need to add a bypass valve to prevent water seizure. Bottom line: I don't know what's up and could really use some straight info about which brand I should go with and what kind of gains I can expect. THANKS ONE AND ALL!

No intake has been shown to give 12-15 hp. Of course it's hard to measure HP gains with a CAI since dynos usually measure HP with the car standing still. The biggest gain from a CAI is that it helps minimize power loss during very hot days/months. I would be leary of anyone suggesting specific gains with any of the intakes. I have the V1 AEM and am very happy with it. The V2 is supposed to be marginally better than the V1.

Thanks very much for the reply Strike...btw, I happen to think THE best color for the car is Formula Red...just stunning. Do you actually feel a difference in the performance of car with the V1 installed, and do you know what kind of gains we're talking about in general with CAI?

My butt dyno tells me there's a difference but many people think the gains are minimal if any. As I said above the main reason to get a CAI is to minimize power losses due to heat. I track my car on road courses frequently and in the summer it can get up to 120 degrees at some of the tracks I go to. The power losses under those conditions are significant and the CAI really helps in those situations. Also, it adds to the sound of the motor and IMO is a nice complement to the already excellent sound of the engine in VTEC.

The AEM V2 is my choice, but it does take a bit of work to get it installed... definitely the most involved of any car I've ever worked on. Using a bypass valve on any CAI negates any power benefit, just so you know.

I have the K&N Typhoon intake on my car. K&N gave it to me when my car was in there booth at the IAS SEMA show. I have to say that the fitment on this intake is perfect. It clears my Spoon STB and the filter comes with a hydro-sock. It's kinda like a net that goes over the entire filter and it repels water. The clamps and brackets it came with are very high quality(all allen head screws). The way they mount the solenoid is very clean compared to others I have seen. As for power.....I guess it feels faster and gained some HP on the high end. It is loud as heck though. Fit and finish is top notch.

Jay619 has the K&N intake.
It sounds amazing!!!!! Its the first car I can hear coming up from behind me. Usually you just get the exhaust roar when I let them pass , but with his, you hear it before hand.
Impressive! I'm actually considering one now, too.
Tell us more about this sock. I don't think Jay has that on there.

The sock is a really fine mesh, it does not restrict airflow at all and it repels water very good. It does not however stop hydrolock when the entire filter is submerged in water, but it does help when it gets wet by rain and stuff. I am selling this intake if anyone is interested.
