Default installed my 4.77 ....whine at ~40+

I just put my differential back in and took the car around the block for a 10 minute ride.
Didnt go past 5k, I noticed around 40 -50 mph there was gear whine. Is this normal? I didnt go past 50 yet so Ive read that it dies after that. before 40 the car sounds stock though.

thanks
Mike

In my experience 4.77s have no whine at all.

4.56 has a small amount.

You should have NO gear whine with 477s IF installed correctly. How hot is the diff getting? what fluid are you running ? Did you heat cycle the break in?

My 4.77s don't whine. I thought they did for a little while but the sound disappeared as quickly as it appeared. It first started after putting a few thousand miles on the gears anyway so I was just being paranoid.

Im not sure how hot the diff is getting I only have 15 miles on it. I used Mobil 1 75-90 I believe it was. the 15 miles are from 3 five miles heat cycles I did. Ill give it a few more days of driving and see what goes on.

thanks for the input guys

Who put the gears in the pumpkin? The install quality can make a big difference. I heard the 4.56 and 4.77s don't whine nearly as much as the old 4.57s. I'd never put another set of those on my car again.

I had a tranny shop do it that rebuilt one of my friends differentials. He has done many diff rebuilds before and I gave him the sheet that came with my motorclasse gears with the specs on them. I've been readin on this issue for a little while now and some people get whine and otheres dont. I might take it down to his shop so he can take a ride with me and see what he thinks

Speak to your mechanic, tell them that you will wait until after the break-in period to make a final decision on a replacement.....
