I have not seen this thread in 7 years. I just realized I never showed how my 'custom door' end up. Here it is.
I also did a 'custom console' for elbow room on the other side.
I now have loads of elbow room on both sides and still love my car!

One 'tip' - I was impatient, and lacking the scecialty trim tool just pulled hard with my hands, clip by clip, starting at the back top of the door. It worked just fine for me, no damage done.
This picture should help clarify step 3, it shows the screws that hold the 'door grip' on from the back side of the door trim panel. I am holding my old door grip up for orientation, above where the new door grip is already installed. The small philips gold chromated screws come in from the back side and hold the grip on to the panel. The service manual doesn't mention these screws.
I was just attempting to replace my handle - I had thought all I had to do was remove the two large philips screws from the inside of the car, but alas one needs to remove the whole door panel to replace the handle.
Thanks for the excellent pictorial and interesing story.

This was a fairly extensive mod. First off I cut out the driver's side of the console and then weld a new top of the new lower cut, so that I did not lose any ridgity on the side. Additionally, I covered the entire front console with a metal piece (completely removable) that was strong enough to stand on, which was then covered with leather. Everything was as strong if not stronger than before.
