Interesting maintenance item for restoring a shifter or even just Improving over shifter feel, am I right? Anybody done this? Kinda feel like trying this although my gearbox is pretty solid, especially after some fresh fluid in the trans. What do ya'll think?

Here are the part numbers if you're curious.

Lever spring 54117-S2A-003
lever ball 54110-S2A-003
cover pivot 54111-S2A-003

Seems worth it. I like how he complains about the 7ft pounds then when he torque it he lays on it. Ha

The replacement parts are a bit unnecessary, unless the bottom pivot is damaged. Just clean and regrease the shifter.

New part always work. Why not replace them when they're out, they're cheap enough. Like pulling the spark plugs to do a compression check and valve clearance check and putting 50,000 mile plugs back it.

Agreed. No reason to replace the plastic pieces since they weren't broken...

I went from a decently new shift collar (pivot ball) to a metal Garage Amis and it improved the shifting immediately. I'm certain that it's not me being bias since I've done this on a few 240SX as well.

How do you remove those plastic pieces without breaking them?

WilloW --

Any tips on installing the Garage Amis collar? Just presses on like the plastic part? Shifter cleaning/greasing seems pretty easy from the videos I just watched.

The Maintenance Minder in my '06 will start nagging me in a couple of weeks and while I'm under the car I'll change the gearbox oil as well as the engine and differential. I'd like to clean/grease the shifter before this so I can detect any changes are the result of this and not the new gearbox oil.

They're plastic parts. After years of constant shifting, they get worn out (especially if they were dry). You don't have to wait until they're broken to replace. The difference in diameter between the new and old part was almost 0.010", and that's just the OD. There was play in the part itself where as the new one was nice and tight without slop. The cover pilot could probably go without replacing. My shifter was re-greased prior to this, but the new part made more of a difference.

Hi Chuck,

1. I set the collar face up on a soft towel with a bit on urea grease in the cavity.
2. Put a dab of urea grease on the pivot ball of the shifter.
3. Position ball of the shifter on the collar and gently tap it into the cavity with one move.
4. Reinstall shifter into the tranny with plenty of urea grease and enjoy.
