Default Im parked downward on a hill. I release ebrake and car didnt move?

Like the title says, I'm in neutral, no foot on brake either. I fully release the ebrake and car didn't roll down the hill, as if ebrake was still on.
Car wouldn't move, so I put it in first and drove and heard a pop in the rear as if I freed up something.

What could be the problem? Ty.

Had it rained or anything between when you parked it and when you drove it again, or were the brakes heavily used just before parking?

The pads must have rusted to the rotors if the car sat for a while.

Normal occurrence, I've had it happen many times.

Its not that the pads rust to rotor, its that rotor rusts everywhere but the pad area, and that difference of surface height for the pads to ride over on has to have more force to overcome, and wipe the rust away.

Also the pads can 'stick' to the rotor (but not rust to), a sort of 'habit bond', so that when you release e brake, the pads have to be forced free from the rotor, which is the pop you hear.
