Thumbs up Identify the engine rattle!

I am assuming the rattle may be from my timing chain tensioner, but I am not 100% sure. Upon warm up I will hear a slight rattle from the front of the valve cover, not injector noise, or valve train; but a distinct sound/rattle. When driving around town for the first 5 to 8 minutes, while applying gas, I will hear the rattle between 4 to 5 thousand RPM

Sounds to me like the timing chain tensioner. I would replace it as soon as possible, being that it helps to keep the valves from crashing into the pistons and all lol. Search Timing Chain Tensioner Replacement..... and a bunch of threads will come up on how to do it.

Does a 'failed' timing chain tensioner really cause engine damage? I've been driving with a TCT rattle for months now, including a couple track days.

^ It would not cause immediate damage, but if the timing chain were to jump off because of the lack of tension on it that would cause damage. Especially if you track the car with the high RPM's. Its just something I would fix right away, know what I mean.

I figured it would be that but only happening when cold and during a certain RPM??

Perhaps when its warmed up the hot chain expands enough to stop the rattle or when its spinning fast enough the centrifugal force takes up the slack?

I'll be replaceing mine today....hopefully I find a local dealer with one in stock

I am thinking the same thing at this point. I will more than likely be ordering a replacement TCT soon.
