Talking I was thinking it was cam tensioner

So I have a 02 around 35k, I like to get the oil changed every 2500 I was about 300 over no big deal but I was getting the poker cards in bike spoke thing. I was pissed because finantially it's tight right now but that needs to be done so F it, I brought it to a buddy of mine he's awesome has a 11 second sti and rebuilds engines with his eyes closed. Perfect scenario showed up turned car off b.s for a sec started car nothing I WAS LIKE FIGURES. So we do my diff fluid, tranny, engine and I try some new stuff Quaker state High RPM 10w30 my boy has a yellow S he said his car runs alot cleaner. Ever since getting it done I have not heard sound since and hope I never do. Question how can changing the engine oil stop this I was positive tensioner and It was making the sound consistantly intill the oil change, granted it did not make the sound when my mechanic looked at it but the oil change seemed to stop it in all. I love my S never had a problem with it, says alot considering I sold my 12 sec LS1 99 Camaro for my S, whatever it needs I will always take care of it but thought I would post my weird situation. Thanks Mark.

After deciphering what I think you're saying, are you sure you weren't extremely low on oil? It doesn't matter how many miles you drove between changes if you've been driving agressively and your car is consuming oil. I had a problem in my '02 that I thought was a tensioner. It turned out the car had consumed 4.5 quarts of oil due to a factory defect that caused a scoring of a cyclinder wall that is common in late model '02 F20C's. The motor blew short there after.

Some folks report that changing the oil only temporarily fixes the issue. If the tensioner is really faulty, the noise will return.

(money2536) Like I said my friend has a S and he said its comon for the S to burn some oil because of the high rpm motor, 2000 miles into my previous oil change I checked I was down 1.5 qt topped off and was good till this oil change. I think the most I have ever been down is 2 qts since I've owned the car which is about a yr and a half. My car runs great never had a noise nothing since owning it besides this before the oil change. But since you are telling me this just for shyts and giggles I will see what my oil is at now if its low thats a problem because the oil change is only about 2-3 weeks in. Thanks Mark

I have an 01, before my dealer replaced my whole bottom end do to cracked silinderwalls they found when removing the head for inspection, my car drank aproxamatly one court of oil every 800miles. They also found some of the consumption to be from the valve seals/guides. I was so happy they covered these repaires under my extended honda care coverage which was purchased from the original owner. I have about 15,000 on the new bottom end and guides. I ran 10/30 castrol dino oil for the recomended brake in period or a bit past without a drop burned. now I have been running 5/30 Moble syn and have noticed some minor usage. I may switch back to dino if it starts to escolate. after going through this I check my oil every fill up, its not hard and its peace of mind, definatly recomend doing this for those ap1 owners.

Oil burning is just something that can happen with the car. I don't see how burning a little oil (but refilling, mind you) would affect the timing chain tensioner.

Billman has stated that if your car sounds like the one in this link (here), then it is the timing chain tensioner going bad.

Considering you've just replaced the oil and the noise has gone away, this is known to mask the failing tensioner for a little while, but the problem still remains.
