Default I hate to do this but...

well i was driving down the road, and as i shift into third at 4000 rpm i notice the engine light go on. I was on my way to play basketball an i was almost there (15 minute drive) so i played for an hour or two. fired up the car and sure enough it was still on- i have no idea why it went on. i just installed the AUT plate this past week but i dont think that should effect anything... doesnt make any weird noises except for the tranny buzz. i'm just wondering if by any chance this is just one of those "s2000" problems, but if its not then i wouldnt mind having a mechanic taking a look at it. and if thats the case, anyone know of a trusty mechanic in SD? like always, thanks for any help any of you can give. i greatly appreciate it

No.

Don't clear it, get it scan tested for codes. That's it.

Is your CEL flashing or just on? If your CEL is flashing you should probably consider getting a flatbed tow to a dealer. If your CEL is just on, you could maybe jump the OBDII port to retrieve a "blinky" DTC, or better still limp to an Autozone, or Pep Boys where I hear they'll lone you code reader. Come to think of it, maybe call and you could go pick up/borrow a code reader if you leave something in exchange.

Since you "hate to do it", I'm sure you've seen these sorts of threads over and over again. What's the usual response to these?
GET THE CODE! Noone can help you till you do. You don't have to go to Honda and pay to get the code. There are places you can go to where they will scan your codes for free. It only takes a couple minutes. Try an Autozone, Pepboys or any other such place.
Come back with the code and we'll see what's next.

we can be of no help until you get the code for us and post it here.

also.... ahem

DO NOT RESET THE CODE WITHOUT OBTAINING IT FIRST, AND DO NOT JUST ASSUME IT WILL GO AWAY IF YOU JUST RESET IT!!!!

by your original post, you make it sorta sound like you're in the mindset that it just "came on" for no reason, and that it's just "one of those things". CELs don't just come on for no reason. there is a reason. your car is talking. you need to listen.

go to autozone or something, they'll pull the code for free. post the code here, and we'll tell you what comes next. also, check your gas cap, be sure it's tight. also, if your CEL were to start blinking constantly, do NOT continue driving the car.

My check engine light's been turning on a lot. I pulled the code and it kept popping up with P1456 "evap leak, tank area." I figured that I just have a bad gas cap, but I haven't had a chance to replace it yet. Pull the code and let us know what code you got, so that we can help you figure it out.

Yup, or it could be the filler neck. If so, warranty fix. Gas cap, too, so see if they'll give you a new one free.

Warranty covers 02's?
I work at Honda and parts want $14 + tax for a new one.

That depends on the "in service" date of your car. You could have purchased an '02 new in '03 if it was left over inventory. Gas cap is emissions related. So, who knows. Also, how about the "extended"? Got on of those?
