I had a disturbing oil change today.
I stuck a really strong little neodymium magnent to the end of my drain plug 10,000km ago and today was the first change since I put it in. Low and behold there was this sliver of valve spring stuck to the end of it. I promptly pulled the valve cover and sure enough, the very front spring on cylinder 1 was missing about the last half inch of the spring right up against the retainer. It's only been over reved once very slightly almost 3 years ago and I've since done the AP2 retainers (which all looked perfect) and the valve lash all measured out within spec even on the damaged spring. Has anyone had a spring fail like this before? Whats the most likely cause for a failure like this?

I didn't think to get a picture of the spring when the valve cover was off (thats what you mean by local area right?). I don't think my phone could have captured it in the orientation it was in anyway.
