When you look at your four options (1) keep the break-in oil in as long as possible, (2) hit the minium mileage for hard use, (3) keep within the 6 month change interval, and (4) ride it out for the full 7,000 miles, it seems to me #3, the time interval, has the lowest priority. Since you're already concerned about it, #4 seems unlikely as well. So that leaves #1 and #2. But, whatever you decide, just make sure you check the level after every fill up and you'll be fine.

Razor,

why don't you drive your car?

Is there a reason or is it because you don't want to accumulate miles?

I switched to Mobile One early and no signs of trouble, in fact it uses no or very, very little oil! I have yet to see anyone post more dynojet 248 Dyno HP than my car (with similar mods, of course) so obviously, I don't think mine is damaged from switching to syn. at 3000 miles. I am with pfb on this one (pure folklore!!!) I sure wouldn't leave any oil in the engine for 12K or a year or whatever (IMO) believing Honda has some miracle oil in it or something.

We all form our opinions based upon our personal experiences and those of people we trust. Honda has stated the S2000 starts life with break-in oil, not miracle oil. Skeptics have confirmed it contains a fair amount of moly. Honda does not recommend switching to synthetic at the first change. They and their engineers have no reason other the facts they gathered to say that. The stated purpose is to ensure proper break-in. Just because you did not wait, doesn't mean you should encourage others not to.

As I said in the beginning, we base our opinions on our own experiences. For example, I for one don't believe leaving oil in for a year is the kiss of death. I not trying to recommend this to any one but I've always changed my oils at 3,000 (my personal choice) or 1 year (my personal choice). Since I've owned several sportscars over the years I have tested the one year between oil changes dozen's of times without an issue. The MGA for example has been a member of my family for 31 years and we placed 3rd overall in a racing event just this past weekend, and the engine runs as sweet as ever. Trust me, I wouldn't do anything to hurt my baby.

So what is a good mileage to co the first change. In that period of time ( about 7,000- 7,500) would you still maintain the same filter? Wouldn't that be too dirty and worn out? Also, when are the required or recommended changes? 3,000 or 7,000? Does the length of time matter as well, like x,xxx or 6 months, whichever comes first. Sorry, but I have been confused and I am getting my S this year so I really want to make sure that I get things right. Last question, what is DINO oil? Thanks in advance.

DINO is "slang" for normal oil... from the ground where the decay of the animals for the Jurasic Park movie died, whereas synthetic is man-made.

The factory-fill oil has special additives, so it should be left in the engine until the first oil change: 7,500 miles, under

What dlq04 says is ture. Here's a copy of a document Honda of America sent to its service departments in the fall of 2001.

Razor,

I was in the same boat as you are (almost). I got my car last fall and only had 1200mi prior to winter storage.

I decided to leave the original oil in through the winter as it was not that "used". I did just last week get the oil changed at 3500mi prior to a 600mi day of hard driving. To date, I have had no oil consumption issues.

If you are only driving in 10 mile increments as you stated the distance being to school and work I would think about changing it at the 6 month time as short stints are supposedly harder than continuous drives.

Just my thoughts

Greg
