Yes I did indeed lock up my engine. I jacked it up and peeked under and sure enough there was a huge ass hole the size of my fist on the bottom of my engine. I can see the crankshaft and a part of a piston wedged in between it. :/ A very sad sight. Looks like im in the market for a new engine. Unfortunately this is my only car. Will post pics in a sec.

I wouldn't say avoid CAI...just use some common sense like don't drive through standing water

Still water runs deep. It's not worth it if you get heavy rains or if the streets flood easy even after a light to moderate rain. Some CAI cost hp so if you DD the car its best to keep the filter up high too to avoid Hydro-locking your engine.

Yeah it scared the shit out of me man. All of a sudden it just started raining out of no where and then my car just stalls out on me. Ive tried looking. Cant find anything affordable right now unfortunately.

Worth is always highly subjective. We get a lot of rain down here and plenty run with CAI's. It's up to each to determine and evaluate the risks and acceptable courses of action.

Look on the bright side. You don't have to worry about water in the pan with all those holes.
