Humming/Whirring Sound Coming from the Rear

Bill, I have a "whirling" sound while cruising on the hwy with partial throttle but it goes away when I let off the throttle. To me the sound comes from the tranny. I've considered this to be normal NVH while the top is up, since I've changed the MTF and heard it since I got it at 8K miles. I don't think it's a bearing issue because it doesn't vary with speed. Since, you've had your car for a long time now I'd like to hear it at the next event for comparison.
Is the sound more audible when you load one side of the car while driving, such as lane changes?

its probably the wheel bearing i had a wheel bearing pronblem. the noise stayed in any gear and even in neutral. it cants be the diff because you would hear clunking noises

as for loading, the sound is as constant as constant can be (which is pretty constant, lol)

hmmm... I took my CV cups off and re-greased and swapped them side to side. I didn't notice any wear in the cups and the boots were in great condition 
I drove around afterwards and I think I heard the noise but I want to drive into work tomorrow to make a final decision.

I really wonder about tire noise? Sometimes the noise will start after the tire has worn down a little. Try putting on a different set of tires on the rear and a test drive. I have a set of rear wheel/tires you can try if you do not have an extra set.
