Default How wet should cylinder walls run?

Why does a very thin coating of oil on the cylinder wall does not result in the oil burning and coming out with the exhaust gas, and a thick coating does?

Does the thin coating actually burn, but there's so little of it that even if it comes out with the exhaust gas, it's not visible as smoke?

Oil isnt as simple as "thick" vs "thin". The molecular construction of the oil is what defines its characteristics. I'm not anywhere near an expert on oil, but a quality synthetic is going to provide more protection at the same or slightly thinner viscosity than "dino oil". Oil typically "burns" as it breaks down. A high quality synthetic has a higher threshold before it breaks down.
