Thanks.

To everyone else that posted. If you would read the entire post I clearly stated that I heard that the maintnence minder system wasn't very reliable. That is why I asked the question. It seems like a lot of people on the boards like to bitch and complain about people posting rather than helping. I thought this was a community of S2K enthusiasts out to help fellow enthusiasts. Lately it doesn't seem that way.
First off, welcome to the s2000 community.

I guess the reason why you get the responses that you get is because this question has been beaten to death. Honeslty, the engine change interval is no different from a 2001 model to a 2002 model to a 2006 model. Its all relatively the same vehicle. The question of "when should I change my oil?" has been asked literally thousands of time. The answer is in the manual. In short, its 3750 miles if you drive in the severe category or 7500 if you drive normal.

You've been here 75 days....take time to read the forums especially the FAQ if you are curious about maintenace or fluid questions for your vehicle.

i usually change my oil between 3-5000 miles with mobil 1 synth and pureone filter, and i drive about 2000 miles a month

with mobil1 synth oil, you can probably change it at a longer interval, i.e. 7000 miles, but i like to change mine at 3-5k, dunno why, just a habbit i guess

A honda technician told me the oil minder on the '06s was simply a counter for 5k miles. People have inferred from the manual saying it uses "other operating parameters" to calculate this as it using rpm's and temperature as factors. While I would like this to be true, maybe it is just a simple 5k mile counter.

Some definitive info on this would be great.

My 15% came on around the first 5k and I had to push the trip button to go back to my regular readouts. Every time I started the car it said 15% again with the 1 and A codes. Those are listed in the back of the owner manual. 1 is change oil and A is check tire pressure. Note that they only display 5% intervals so 11% to 15% would show 15%. Why they did that is beyond me.

I was thinking of waiting more towards 0% but it got annoying so I just changed it. According to the codes, I didn't have to change the filter but I did anyway.

I would stick to the 3750 rule and I will myself now that the break-in oil is out.

The old "MAINT. R'QUIRED" light was a 7500 mile mileage counter. Why would Honda put in an oil minder and reduce it to 5000 miles?

I think we need to know from various '06 owners what their experience is on their mileage vs % on the oil minder. If everyone comes up with 5000 miles @ 15%, then I've made the wrong assumption.

How about it? Can all you guys with '06 cars post up your observations?

Can't answer for 15%@ 5,000 miles, but, can say that @ 3352 miles mine reads 50%. Using this figure as a guide my guess is that it isn't just a 5,000 mile counter.

just under 5k on the odo and im at 30%. with my experience as a tech the honda system works off of rpm and temp. when i had my rsx-s you could go out and beat on it all night and drop 10% to 15% but baby it for a month and only drop 5% to 10%.

Says who? If you honestly think Honda would equip their best (and only) current sports car with a bad oil minder then change your oil every 3k. People ask over and over about how often to change their oil. This has been covered hundreds of times. Pick a good brand name oil and just be consistent, it doesn't matter what your change interval is so long as its reasonable (7k or less for most people).

OK, I don't think we need to get any more testamonials. I think we can safely say that this statement:

Is a crock of sh!t.
That Honda tech needs to go back to school.

Alright, I did some googling, I didn't bother searching the forums here. This might have already been posted but I found this extremely useful. While I don't own an '06 this should answer questions that '06 owners have about how their maintenance minder works. If it were me I'd learn to trust it and just enjoy the car, Honda puts a lot of thought into the S2000, evidenced by the continual advancement of little items that they seem to keep tweaking every few years (carbon syncros, traction control, etc. etc.). I found the information at this link.

[B]September 2005
Taking the Mystery Out of the Maintenance Minder System
To help vehicle owners know when scheduled
maintenance is due, Honda has introduced the
maintenance minder system in these models.
