How necessary is aftercooler?

The point made above by joebud is one I hadn't considered, and is a good one: even out of boost, the aftercooler is going to increase air density and thus horsepower.
So basically what I am hearing is this: without the AC and with the standard pulley there is no risk of detonation even at high ambient temps; and I've not heard anything about roughness or hesitation in such temps. so that's good. On the downside, such a setup is not well-suited for further juicing-up, and in general produces less power (this one is obvious).

gropos, it's almost adorable. you remind me of me when i was spending hours upon hours and racking my brain trying to figure out what i should do with the car. now that i'm almost done (well ... with the engine anyway. i still have bodywork to do), i miss it.

Many of us (and I'd say any of us with his head screwed on straight) are looking for a good increase in power, rather than a peak number for bragging rights.
