Default how much $ to install new transmission or rebuild

My race car is grinding into 5th and 6th, and now has decided to lock me out of 1st gear..... not that big of a deal if we did rolling starts, but we have been doing standing starts so I would get clobbered from behind and/or lose a few spots at the start.

I missed some bargains for used tranny's on ebay, so I want to do this the smart way instead of just paying the local honda dealer $2k to rebuild mine.

thanks

bla bla bla...do a search... I didn't have time....

Scot...rebuilding it will probably cost the same as a used one if you are sourcing it out.

It is not that bad dropping the tranny with the right tools and level of expertise. Though you should another person handy. Try the bone yards...

I'd go with a used one myself, having just done a clutch job at home with the help of a few buddies. Two guys with decent tools can swap a tranny in a day, mine took 12 hours because of complications like a SC and impossibly-tight drive shaft bolts.

I am in a hurry at this point.... I need the car back in my hands in about 2 weeks..... so I am taking it to a local place who said to remove and reinstall would be $400.00...then we need to add on for syncro's or whatever it needs...

Hopefully I am back with the car for well under $1k.???

the $400 seemed reasonable for removing and reinstalling to me....

the best deal i could probably get on a used tranny would be about $1000-$1200 since I am in a hurry....

I won't have the time to order parts from anywhere other than the local dealer or possibly Hardtopguy. I definately need the car back in 2 weeks exactly.....and the place doesn't plan to start working on it until next wed-thurs.....so that gives them just one week to get the job done...

next question - if i buy a used tranny.... i assume the clutch doesn't come with it...how long does it take to swap my clutch, etc... into the other tranny?

thanks for the help guys!

maybe I will try to get a replacement up here by the time they take mine out.....that way we can have two choices..... if the replacement is perfect (which it should be i guess), then they can just throw it in and I can attempt to have the old one rebuilt some day or sell it to someone smart....

i took the "buy one" advice and have a tranny hopefully on it's way to the repair shop.... i figured at the worst I could have mine rebuilt and sell it, or put it in the basement for later use.....

thanks for the help!

ya, i appreciate everyone's input..... when I looked at the part costs...just a couple of parts could cost $600 pretty quickly, plus install........

i was thinking i would be out of the place for well under $1k but i didn't know how expensive parts are.... now i know.

i already have 4:77's so the MY04 would probably make it almost too short..... good idea though.
