I really hate the fuel gauge in the car--I'm one of those that is at 1/2 tank after 90 miles and a right around 200-210 when all bars disappear. I'll drive another 20 miles with no bars and then top off my tank with about 11.5 gallons. So basically, my fuel gauge registers at completely empty when I have almost a 1/4 tank left.
(need reference) Low fuel indicator comes on early due to the fact having fuel in the tank somehow contributes to fuel pump cooling.
(need reference) Digital gauge is known to be way wrong. When it indicates midpoint, you're a bit less, when you're out (no bars) you still have about 2 gallons (US).
Go to ecomodder.com to learn all about how wind, hills, throttle position, etc affects your mileage. While you're there check the garage for CRX2K's S2000...38 or so was my best sustained mpg (normal conditions, very controlled driver inputs on known routes).

I track when the fuel light comes on and when I run the car out of gas for trips from 29 Aug 08 to 30 Sep 08, yielding about 65-70 miles after the light comes on....I'm pretty comfortable in +45 miles max when driving like a normal S2000 driver.

As RJ explained, there are ALOT of factors that contribute to your total range. My absolute range was 381 miles. These were the factors
*100% highway
*driver only (no passenger)
*48lbs of luggage
*new fluids in Engine, Transmission and Differential
*215/45/17f 245/40/17 rear all season Nexen N7000
*34psi cold tire pressure
*67k on the odometer before trip start
*F5 Fujita CAI
*external temperatures ranged from 42 (georgia) to 23 (ohio)
The biggest factor in this was the temperature that day. The colder, the more range you will have. My gas light came on at 350. I purposely ran out of gas (had a 5 gallon jug) at 381.7 to be exact.
Now adays its a different story. I have wider and stickier tires and in the southern spring/summer, regardless of A/C on or off you're mileage will suffer. The less humid, the more mileage you'll get... also. the car has 10k more on the odometer. I get about 280/290 with about 85% city driving now.
