... Mobil1 5 quart container ... 1.35 quarts remaining ... full 1000 miles ago ...(he now knows to check both sides)
The dipstick appeared to show about 2mm of oil on it, both sides,
Please dont experiment, or think its safe to let your engine go even one quart low. I

If any damage is done, its done.
Nothing anyone can do about it now.
Maybe recommend a UOA on the oil that in there now, to see any sign of elevated wear metals.

maybe this is just a coincidence.
when i turned the engine on, i heard a "dry" sound.
sure enough, the oil was a bit lower than the middle of the dipstick.
I now check it quite often.
i wonder what this one sounded like when it was fired up..

I think you are referring to piston slap, which can be normal, particularly on really cold days. It is more of a loud clattering rather than a knock sound.

If it was run low on previous occassions I think the damage can manifest itself later down the road when you don't necessarily expect it. If this was the first occassion and the driver didn't do any hard cornering or high rpm operation he may have escaped this time.

He had an honest 1.35 quarts remaining in the oil pan. If he would have VTECed the engine, or cornered the car agressively at all, he would have instantly spun a bearing or worse.
The dipstick appeared to show about 2mm of oil on it, both sides, but this was simply oil that had been scraped up by the stick from the edges.

I wouldn't think it would register on the dipstick with that little oil in it.

Hence why I said appeared. The stick will always make a small scrape and register a mm or two.
It takes 3.5 to 4 quarts to contact the tip of the dipstick.

i check my oil a couple times a week and esp after a good thrashing. i cant stress enough how important it is to check and top off as often as you can depending how much u beat on it.
